Organic foods refer fruits and vegetables that have been grown organically, meaning no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides were used in the production. Similarly, organic meat must be from animals that have had access to feed outside, didn’t feed on non-organic feeds and hormones for growth enhancements.
In the light of this, organic foods are healthier and nutritious than conventionally produced foods. It is obviously because they lack chemicals in them as compared to the genetically modified foods. They contain fewer pesticides and other chemicals that could lead to cancer or other illnesses when introduced in the body.
Most of these foodstuffs are sold or consumed freshly from the garden. However for the packaged organic foods, it is required that they have a mark of the organic certification indicating that the food was produced under the organic foods requirements.
In the case of processed foods, it must only contain organic ingredients, and if there were non-organic ones, the organic content must be up to 95%. No additives are allowed or any other artificial food preservatives.
On the downside, organic food is more expensive than the regular food, and this is attributed to the cost of labor in production and the cost of the organic certification. It is, therefore, advisable to have your organic garden to cut down on the cost of vegetables and fruits.
In case you still have to buy, shop around, compare prices and settle for farmer’s markets as compared to grocery stores. Additionally, buying fruits in plenty when they are in season and then freezing or canning them is highly recommended.
