Lids for Kids is a bicycle helmet safety program
Riding bicycles are an important part of a child's development. We see an annual estimate of 200 deaths and over 153,000 cases of head injuries amongst children in the United States. Lids for Kids events are held in Michigan on bike safety and prevention of injury by demonstrating the use of bike helmets.
These events are held across Lansing, Traverse City & Grand Rapids. They are hosted to educate children between the ages of 4 and12 years. Kids can even get their bike helmets custom fitted at these events with the help of Lids for Kids volunteers.
Apart from talks on bike safety, a host of fun events, prizes and games simultaneously take place at these events.
On May 14, more than 400 children were gifted custom-fitted helmets at the Traverse City Lids for Kids event. Despite the cold weather, families wholeheartedly participated in the fun and games. Kids learned bicycle safety tips, met local fire-fighters, toured a fire engine, and cruised an obstacle course on a bike.
On May 21, more than 500 children were gifted custom-fitted helmets at the Lansing Lids for Kids event. Local businesses and proprietors contributed by way of competition prizes. Kids won tickets to Lansing Lugnuts baseball game. They also hung out and took pictures with team mascots Sparty and The Big Lug. Passes to Impression 5 Science museum were also given out.
The events are made possible courtesy of the Sinas Dramis Law Firm, Brain Injury Association of Michigan, Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, and the Michigan Association for Justice.
The next Lids for Kids event will be held at Garfield Park (Burton & Jefferson entrance) Grand Rapids, Saturday, June 11, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
