It may seem unbelievable but the research is in. This is monumentally important to the health of your baby and possibly the easiest thing for you to control.
Your diet during pregnancy.
Scientists believe that a baby’s lifetime of good or poor health is determined by the nutrition it receives during your pregnancy. Poor nutrition during pregnancy and in the first few months of life may lead to higher risks of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Professor Koletzko of the University of Munich and coordinator of a Europe wide research project on Early Nutrition Programming said: “Major differences in risk factors for significant health problems – such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, bone health, immune function, cognitive development and behavior – have already been observed in children who experienced different diets in the first few months of life, or whose mothers were given different supplements during pregnancy.”
Do your homework …
My Naturally Well Baby – a website set up by Dr. van der Veer and offering wonderful, detailed yet easy to follow information about diet for your pregnancy.
Ask Dr. Sears – the author of some of my favorite books on baby care, this web page guides you through the ins and outs of your diet during pregnancy.
Prenatal Vitamins
Even the most complete diet cannot provide everything that a mother and baby needs for optimal health during pregnancy and breastfeeding. A supplement is the best way to cover your bases. However, I recommend you steer away from the prescription that your doctor may hand you and look for higher quality elsewhere (unless you have an enlightened doctor who is educated in integrative medicine). Most prescription prenatal vitamins are made by large commercial manufacturers that are going to use the cheapest ingredients possible, many of which may not even be in “usable” form for the body.
If you do your prenatal vitamin research you may find the name Rainbow Light coming up frequently. Women love these vitamins. Rainbow Light is the creator of the first ever food-based line of supplements that offer natural, usable vitamins to the body. They are complete with digestive enzymes and even probiotics. Both very important to your health and your baby.

One of the most important determinants of the baby’s health and development, is the mother’s diet. Regulation and attention to the diet should begin before pregnancy. It is essential that you be at an optimal weight before you become pregnant. Also, calcium is one of the most important minerals you will need during pregnancy . An increase in dairy products such as skim milk, cheese, yogurt and pudding is an easy way to consume lots of calcium. Hope this is a useful addition to this article.

Hi Martha,
Thanks for the wonderful comment, you are absolutely right. I also think exercise is extremely important during pregnancy and the more active you are the easier your labor will be! I was working a physical job during my pregnancy but I wish I had been even more active, my labor was definitely not easy!!

I definitely agree with Martha. Pregnant women needs more calcium because it makes the baby’s bones stronger. Also those women who eat nutritious foods have fewer or no complications during pregnancy and even when they are on labor. They tend to have healthier babies. Eating a well balanced diet and nutritious foods is one of the most important thing that pregnant women can do to ensure a healthier future for you and your baby.

i do agree with “the baby will be healthy only when the baby receive much more nutrients from his/her mother”.the mother being a pregnant has to take healthy food which is fully nutritious. if mother takes a healthy food the baby inside the womb will intern gets some healthy vitamins from her and can live long without any disease. It is very useful if a women with pregnancy takes leafy vegetables, eggs and milk as daily food.healthy food not only keeps the baby healthy, but also makes all parts of the baby stronger and his/her mind sharper.

Babies these days are so lucky! With all the research and awareness campaigns going for them, there are practically no excuses left for not giving them the very best.
When I was pregnant, I was so anxious about giving my baby the best possible care. I not only relied on my doctor’s and friends’ advice, but I also did a lot of research. It’s amazing what information you can get on the web!

Mothers who eat an unhealthy diet during pregnancy may be putting their children at risk of developing long term, irreversible health issues including obesity, raised levels of cholesterol and blood sugar. So, it seems that a mother’s diet whilst pregnant and breastfeeding is very important for the long term health of her child.

During pregnancy a woman has to provide good nutrition for two individuals. The growing baby gets all its nourishment from its mother through the umbilical cord, so diet is very important. If the mother is lacking in any vitamins and nutrients her baby might lack them too.

I totally agree with the post that nutrition of babies during pregnancy is really important. Because during pregnancy, babies inside the womb of the mother slowly develops. When you know that your pregnant, you should right away consult a doctor so they can give you prenatal vitamins that helps the babies development.

Eating well during pregnancy is more than simply increasing how much you eat. You must also consider what you eat. The extra food you eat shouldn’t just be empty calories — it should provide the nutrients your growing baby needs. For example, calcium helps make and keep bones and teeth strong. While you’re pregnant, you still need calcium for your body, plus extra calcium for your developing baby. Similarly, you require more of all the essential nutrients than you did before you became pregnant.

I wouldn’t normally approve a comment that is nothing more than an advertisement but I checked out this store and was very happy with what I found. The products are all high quality, a good variety, the same that I would find at my favorite health food store, the owner of which is VERY particular about what she carries.
Many of these brands I would use myself and have.
Check it out!

Martha’s right. Calcium is really important during this period, it also makes the baby’s bone stronger. It helps a lot in the development of the baby. I recommend this to be read by mothers so that they would know that it’s important to eat healthy during pregnancy.

A well-balanced diet should contain something from all the food groups: dairy products, fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, fat and carbohydrates. A pregnant woman needs to eat something from all these food groups every day in order to get the proper amounts of energy.

This is one of the reason why pregnant women should be under a delicate care of doctors or midwife so that their nutrition will be tracked. Their body should be ready enough with the changes of their before and after pregnancy. They need more vitamins to supply the needs of the baby inside the womb otherwise it ill lead to underweight or malnutrition.

It makes sense that nutrition during pregnancy will have an impact in the baby health. If tobacco is dangerous, by a simple ecuation natural foods are a healthy
option. Also the mother’s emotions are linked with the baby balance.

a friend of mine did an experiment… she quit smoking with her first child, he came out 9 lbs even… the second child she carried, she smoked the entire pregnancy and that one came out 8 lbs 9 oz and was 4 days late… all this nonsense about low birth weight and premature stuff is a joke, if you know how to balance smoking and taking care of your eating habits, nothing happens! get over it!
